5th Annual Doc Holliday: Saints & Sinners Festival CANCELLED

Join us for the 5th Annual Doc Holliday Saints and Sinners Festival in downtown Denison Texas. Doc Holliday had an office in Denison. Help celebrate Denison’s formative years in 1870-1880’s. There will be various Authors, Wild West Photos, Card Games, Antiques, Food, Music, Wagon Rides, a Parade and lots more! We will help you imagine Denison as a boomtown in the early days! A brush arbor revival and hymn singing will also be held. The Red River Railroad Museum will have an open house and train rides for the kids. Look for some popular characters and likely a shootout. 85th Annual Denison Christmas Parade “Winter Wonderland”

This year marks the 85th year for the Denison Christmas Parade. The first parade took place on Friday, December 7th, 1934 on Main Street in Downtown Denison and was planned and hosted by the Denison Chamber. The parade was divided into seven sections, each section led by it’s own brass band and captain. It was billed as a mammoth gala parade ushering in the Christmas holidays. Bands came from Dallas, Sherman and other towns to help celebrate the Christmas season. Harry Weingarten was in charge of the more than 50 floats. Prior to the parade, the bands would march down each section of Main Street playing Christmas songs to get people in the spirit of Christmas. Store fronts left their lights on, adding to the lively activities of the evening. The Katy Drum and Bugle corps played on Main Street after the parade was over.
J.L. Kraft, President of the Kraft Corporation was Master of Ceremonies as Kraft had purchased the Phenix cheese factory and had invested over $100,000 in the facility to produce mayonnaise and Kraft Processed Cheese. The poultry industry in Denison exploded with the anticipation of Kraft using 8,000,000 eggs a year with an estimated $2,000,000 value to the poultry industry.
Events of interest for 1934:
• Bonnie and Clyde were killed in May.
• Babe Ruth was playing baseball
• The New York Giants beat Chicago Bears for the National Title
• Roosevelt was broadcasting “Fireside Chats” on the radio
• The Great Depression was at an all-time low
• George Gershwin was highly popular as was Jean Harlow and Shirley Temple
• Hitler had just been “voted” leader of the Third Reich
The number one Christmas song was Guy Lombardo’s version of “Winter Wonderland.” In keeping with that spirit, the theme of the 85th Annual Christmas Parade is “Winter Wonderland, A Christmas Celebration.”

3rd annual Trick or Treat in the Village

Come on out to Frontier Village on Saturday, October 26th, 2019, from 10am-2pm for our “Trick or Treat in the Village.” There will be games, a bounce house, vendors, paranormal speakers in the museum and much more.
Go Trick or Treating at the houses and have fun playing games.
Admission for all ages is 1 non-perishable food item or $1 each.
All non-perishable food items collected will be donated to a local shelter or food bank.

Kick Back at the Fall Fest Saturday October 5, 2019!
Held the first Saturday in October, the 32nd Fall Festival is a fun-filled action packed day for the entire family in downtown Denison. A combined effort of the Denison Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Denison provides for an event you won’t want to miss!
A pancake breakfast complete with bacon and sausage starts the day in Heritage Park. Arts & Crafts booths fill Main Street while food vendors delight shoppers with yummy festival food.
This year we are changing things up a bit with a designated food area where all food vendors will be centrally located, allowing our visitors easy access to a variety of items. Plus, located near Heritage Park, visitors can sit in our outdoor seating area and enjoy live entertainment all day long on the Heritage Park stage.
Another new attraction this year is the Non-Profit Party Park Kidz Zone! In our effort to promote SHOP LOCAL/PLAY LOCAL we have opened our Kidz Zone to area Non-Profits. Each year thousands of dollars leave our community and this year we are changing that! Come enjoy bounce houses, games, face painting and more in our area provided solely by Non-Profits from Denison and Grayson County. Now your dollars help support the very entities that support our community.
And don’t forget the shiny vintage cars in the 200 block! Take a stroll down memory lane with these classics. Then stroll on down to the historic Barret Building, aka Radio Vision building and enjoy demonstrations from area organizations.

Frontier Days
Step back in time to the 1800’s and join us for a living history demonstration. Learn about the history of Grayson County in the 1800’s, tour the homes, we will have re-enactors, demonstrators, vendors, concessions, and more.
Re-enactments and skirmishes will be scheduled throughout the day, and all the homes the homes will be open all day to tour, with guides to tell you their history.
The cost for adults is $5. Ages 6-17 years is $1. Age 5 and under are free.

Historic Sites Free Day
Take a free tour of the Eisenhower Birthplace House! Tours begin at the top of each hour. The last tour is at 4:00. The Eisenhower Birthplace is located at 609 S. Lamar Ave. in Denison, Texas. For more information please call 903-465-8908
