Ocean has collected a mountain of gold and platinum records, while hitting No. 1 on pop charts from the US and UK to Australia, Germany and Holland. Born in Trinidad, Billy’s family moved to London’s East End when he was seven years old and he immediately migrated to the sound of soul singers like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, as well as pop groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Billy’s first break was recording the Motown-influenced single, “Love Really Hurts Without You,” which reached No. 2 in the UK charts. Two Top 20 singles would follow, “Love on Delivery” and “Stop Me,” before “Red Light Spells Danger” became a smash in the UK and across the pond in the US.
And the hits kept coming. First, the million-selling, No. 1 single, “Caribbean Queen” (for which Billy won a Grammy for best R&B Vocal Performance), followed by “Loverboy” and “Suddenly.” A year later, Billy recorded “When the Going Gets Tough (The Tough Get Going),” as the theme song for the hit movie “Jewel of the Nile,” starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito.
Billy then launched the “Love Zone” album, which stayed in the Top 40 for six months and produced another No. 1 single with “There’ll be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry).” What followed was his classic smash hit, “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car,” before he began a worldwide tour to ever-growing audiences.
After huge accolades and success, Billy took a break to spend time with his growing family, but in 2007 he felt the itch again and hit the road to perform hit after hit nightly. Since then, he’s recorded new albums, released a greatest hits package and continued to tour the globe—and now he’s at the WinStar Global Event Center on July 27.
