SUMMARY:CPR Class
DESCRIPTION:The first week in June is National CPR and AED awareness! To help people feel more comfortable in an emergency\, the Parks and Recreation is offering free hands only CPR classes. Classes will be available throughout the week at different times. These classes are intended to give the layperson or bystander enough tools to be able to act and help in an emergency. CPR is a useful tool for everyone to know\, and The American Red Cross has made it very simple by introducing a hands only component\, meaning\, you are not required to give ventilation in an emergency. The classes are free\, however\, you must pre-register and the class size is limited. \nJune 3- Municipal Ballroom 10AM-11AM\nJune 4- Senior Center 5:30PM-6:30PM\nJune 5- Senior Center 12PM-1PM\nJune 6- Parks and Recreation Glennie O Ham 11-12PM \nPrice: Free\nMust be pre-regististered.

SUMMARY:Dancing Catfish: Poetry Writers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“Write a poem — any poem!” At Dancing Catfish we do just that. We know that poems come in all shapes and sizes\, all sorts of moods\, up and down (and sideways)\, and we get together for a full evening each week to share what we are doing\, and help one another figure out what will make our poems bounce\, tap dance and sing (if that’s what they want to do)\, or change the world (if they can). Under the guidance of prize-winning poet Peter Anderson\, we aim to figure out together how to make each poem as strong and effective as it can be. Which is exactly what our poems want us to do.\nThis is a six-week long writers workshop held Thursday evenings from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM\nWorkshops are held at Ideation Station led by Dr. Peter Anderson\, an award-winning poet. SUMMARY:Second Saturday Painted Buntings
DESCRIPTION:The Painted Bunting is a very unusual bird. It is the smallest species that retains female-like plumage into the second year\, when males are old enough to breed. Since small birds typically only live a few years\, why can Painted Buntings keep female-like plumage\, which seems to be less likely to attract a mate than the mature male plumage? What\, if any\, advantage do subadult Painted Buntings gain from retaining this plumage? Wayne Meyer will report on his research at Hagerman NWR which has been trying to answer these questions. The answers are surprising. Come hear about the research and pose the next great question to be investigated. Perhaps your input will help move this project forward in a new direction. \nWayne Meyer is Associate Professor and Chair of the Biology department at Austin College\, where he has been teaching for 26 years. He started birding at 13 in Connecticut. In 1993 he finally achieved his life’s dream of being paid to look at birds when he joined the faculty of Austin College. He has birded both coasts of the U.S. extensively and now has spent a quarter century birding in Texas and Oklahoma. The proximity of Austin College to Hagerman NWR has made research on prairie birds easy and convenient and he has been studying song learning and singing in Painted Buntings for over a decade. Meyer is also a sought after speaker for Master Naturalist groups and a frequent speaker at the Friends of Hagerman NWR second Saturday programs. \nPhoto Credit: Donna Niemann
